In 60 seconds

The route in 60 seconds

Two capitals eighty kilometres apart, connected by a two-hour ferry that runs roughly every two hours. Helsinki gives you design, sauna and the archipelago; Tallinn gives you a walled medieval city and a cheaper, livelier food scene. Three days is the minimum that does justice to both — two nights in Helsinki, one in Tallinn, or the reverse if you fly home from Estonia.

Day by day

How the days fall

The order we would follow, with the transfers already in the right place.

Day 1

Helsinki

Arrive, walk the centre, sauna in the evening.

  1. Morning

    Arrive & drop bags

Airport train to Central Station, 30 minutes on a normal ticket.

  2. Lunch

    Old Market Hall

Soup and salmon at the counters on the harbour front.

  3. Afternoon

    Design District on foot

Start at Uudenmaankatu and work south through Punavuori's studios and galleries.

  4. Dinner

    Punavuori

Small plates and Finnish wine lists — the neighbourhood is dense with good rooms.

  5. Evening

    Löyly

Book the late slot. Sea swim between rounds, whatever the month.

Day 2

Helsinki → Tallinn

Island in the morning, crossing in the afternoon.

  1. Morning

    Suomenlinna

First ferry from Market Square; walk to the far ramparts rather than stopping at the first café.

  2. Lunch

    Back at the harbour

Eat before boarding — ferry food is fine, not good.

  3. Afternoon

    Crossing to Tallinn

Two hours. Outside deck leaving Helsinki, lounge for the rest.

  4. Dinner

    Rataskaevu 16

Book before you leave home. The Old Town's one dinner worth planning around.

  5. Evening

    Põrgu

A cellar and a short, serious Estonian beer list.

Day 3

Tallinn

Old Town early, creative districts after lunch.

  1. Morning

    Toompea & the walls

Patkuli and Kohtuotsa platforms before the day boats arrive.

  2. Lunch

    Balti Jaama Turg

Counters downstairs, vintage upstairs, ten minutes downhill.

  3. Afternoon

    Telliskivi & Kalamaja

Studios in the old rail depot, then the painted wooden streets toward the sea.

  4. Dinner

    F-hoone

No booking needed before seven. Then the airport, or one more night.

Transport

Between destinations

  • Helsinki → TallinnFerry2 h 00

Departures roughly every two hours from the West or South terminal. Book a seat in the forward lounge; foot passengers can board 20 minutes before sailing.

Highlights

Key experiences

If the trip is cut short, these are the four to protect.

A public sauna on the water

Löyly in Helsinki, or the sauna at Noblessner in Tallinn. Both put you in the sea between rounds.

Suomenlinna at opening

The sea fortress is on a normal transit ticket and is emptiest before eleven.

The crossing itself

Take the outside deck for the first twenty minutes out of Helsinki — the archipelago run is the best part.

Tallinn's Old Town before ten

Walk the walls and Toompea before the day boats arrive from Finland.

Stay

Where to stay

Helsinki
Kamppi for transport, Punavuori for restaurants. Both are walkable to the ferry terminals.
Tallinn
Rotermann puts you between the ferry port and the Old Town, which is exactly where you want to be for one night.
