The route in 60 seconds

Two hours of train separates two cities that read very differently. Dublin is literary, dense and expensive; Belfast is industrial, direct and improving fast. Add a day on the Causeway coast and the route stops being a city break and becomes a proper short trip.

Day by day

How the days fall

The order we would follow, with the transfers already in the right place.

Day 1

Dublin

Georgian core and the National Museum.

  1. Morning

Trinity College & the Long Room

First entry slot, then walk out through Front Square.

  2. Lunch

    Grafton Street side streets

Anywhere off the main run — the main run is for shopping.

  3. Afternoon

    National Museum: Archaeology

Free, and the bog bodies alone justify the hour.

  4. Evening

    The Cobblestone

A traditional session in Smithfield. Arrive before nine for a seat.

Day 2

Dublin

Coast in the morning, city in the evening.

  1. Morning

    DART to Howth

Thirty minutes up the coast for the cliff loop and a seafood lunch.

  2. Afternoon

    Kilmainham Gaol

Book ahead. The clearest single explanation of modern Irish history.

  3. Evening

    Portobello

Dinner along the canal, away from Temple Bar entirely.

Day 3

Dublin → Belfast

Train north, afternoon on the waterfront.

  1. Morning

    Enterprise to Belfast

Two hours fifteen from Connolly. Sit on the right for the coastal stretch.

  2. Afternoon

    Titanic Quarter

The museum, then the slipways outside — the scale only registers standing on them.

  3. Evening

    Cathedral Quarter

Dinner and a bar with music. The Duke of York's alley is the obvious start.

Day 4

Causeway coast

Hire car, coast road, back for dinner.

  1. Morning

    Carrick-a-Rede

Book the rope bridge slot; the cliff path is worth it even if you don't cross.

  2. Lunch

    Ballintoy or Bushmills

Harbour café or the distillery, depending on the weather.

  3. Afternoon

    Giant's Causeway & Dunluce

Late afternoon light, and the tour buses gone by four.

Highlights

Key experiences

If the trip is cut short, these are the four to protect.

The Long Room, Trinity College

Book the first entry of the day; the Book of Kells queue builds fast.

A Belfast black taxi tour

Ninety minutes on the political murals, told by people who lived it.

The Causeway coast road

Carrick-a-Rede, the Giant's Causeway and Dunluce Castle in one unhurried day.

Traditional music in the Cobblestone

Smithfield, Dublin. Sessions, not performances — stand at the back and listen.

Stay

Where to stay

Dublin
Stay south of the Liffey around Portobello or Camden for quieter streets and better eating.
Belfast
The Cathedral Quarter puts you in the middle of the night-time city; Queen's Quarter is calmer.
