In 60 seconds

The route in 60 seconds

A route that trades sea level for two thousand metres in a single afternoon. Barcelona needs no argument; Andorra is the surprise — a micro-state of Romanesque churches, serious hiking and duty-free shopping, wedged between France and Spain. Best in September, when the city has cooled and the high valleys are still open.

Stops

Where you sleep

Stop 13 nights

Barcelona

Spain

Gaudí, the Gothic quarter, and one day at the beach or on Montjuïc.

Stop 22 nights

Andorra la Vella

Andorra

A base for the Madriu valley and the Romanesque church route.

Day by day

How the days fall

The order we would follow, with the transfers already in the right place.

Day 1

Barcelona

Gothic quarter and the waterfront.

  1. Morning

    Barri Gòtic on foot

The cathedral cloister, Plaça del Rei, and the Roman wall fragments behind it.

  2. Afternoon

    Picasso Museum

Book ahead. Five medieval palaces knocked together, which is half the pleasure.

  3. Evening

    El Born

Tapas standing up, then a bar on Passeig del Born.

Day 2

Barcelona

Modernisme, top to bottom.

  1. Morning

    Sagrada Família

First slot, tower included. Ninety minutes.

  2. Afternoon

    Park Güell & Gràcia

Timed entry to the monumental zone, then walk down into Gràcia's squares.

  3. Evening

    Gràcia

Dinner on Plaça del Sol. The city's best neighbourhood evening.

Day 3

Barcelona → Andorra

Coach into the mountains.

  1. Morning

    Boqueria & Sant Antoni

One last market morning before the transfer.

  2. Afternoon

    Coach to Andorra la Vella

Three and a quarter hours; the last forty minutes climb through the Segre gorge.

  3. Evening

    Andorra la Vella

Walk the old quarter around Casa de la Vall, then an early night before the hike.

Day 4

Andorra

A full day in the Madriu valley.

  1. Morning

    Into the Madriu

Start from Escaldes. No road, no cars, and a 900-metre climb over the day.

  2. Afternoon

    Refugi and back

Turn around at the refuge unless you have booked a night in it.

  3. Evening

    Escaldes thermal baths

Caldea, if you want the spa; the valley's smaller hotels have better saunas.

Day 5

Andorra

Romanesque churches, then down.

  1. Morning

Sant Joan de Caselles & Ordino

Two of the best Romanesque churches in the Pyrenees, twenty minutes apart.

  2. Afternoon

    Coach back

To Barcelona airport directly, or on to Toulouse if you are continuing north.

Transport

Between destinations

  • Barcelona → Andorra la VellaBus3 h 15

Direct coaches from Barcelona Nord and the airport, several a day. Passport needed — Andorra is outside the EU and the Schengen border is informal but real.

Highlights

Key experiences

If the trip is cut short, these are the four to protect.

Sagrada Família at opening

Book the first slot with the tower. The east windows are the reason to be there early.

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley

Andorra's UNESCO-listed glacial valley, with no road into it. A full day on foot.

Romanesque churches of the high valleys

Santa Coloma and Sant Joan de Caselles — small, ancient and almost always empty.

A vermouth hour in Gràcia

Barcelona's Sunday afternoon ritual, in the squares north of the Eixample.

Stay

Where to stay

Barcelona
Gràcia or Sant Antoni over the Gothic Quarter — quieter nights and better neighbourhood eating.
Andorra
Stay in Ordino or Encamp rather than the capital if hiking is the point. The capital is for shopping.
