The city walls
Expensive2 km circuit · 25 m high
First entry at eight, anticlockwise, one hour. Doing this at noon in July is a genuine mistake.

In 60 seconds
Dubrovnik's walled city is genuinely extraordinary and genuinely overwhelmed. The way to enjoy it is to invert the cruise-ship rhythm: walk the walls at opening, spend the middle of the day on an island or in the sea, and come back to the Stradun after six once the day-trippers have gone. Two nights covers the city. A third buys you Lokrum, Cavtat or the Pelješac wine road.

The things that would make the trip incomplete without them.
2 km circuit · 25 m high
First entry at eight, anticlockwise, one hour. Doing this at noon in July is a genuine mistake.
Nature reserve · 10 min by boat
Peacocks, a Benedictine monastery and a salt lake. The best midday escape from the walls.
Viewpoint · 405 m
Go up for sunset, walk down the switchbacks if your knees allow.
Eat
A short list, kept short on purpose. Each entry answers one question: when is this the right choice?
Where to eat the food this city is actually known for.
Dalmatian · Modern
Where residents eat, twenty minutes from the walls and half the price inside them.
No booking, no ceremony, reliably good.
Seafood · Counter service
Octopus burger, paper tray, five minutes. The honest lunch inside the walls.
Worth planning the evening around.
Fine dining · On the walls
Built into the ramparts above the old port. The one splurge that earns its setting.
Mornings, and the slow hour between things.
Specialty coffee
The only serious coffee inside the Old Town. Small, and it knows it.
Beyond the obvious
Less obvious, rarely queued for, and usually the part people remember.
Cliff bar through a hole in the wall
Follow the handwritten 'cold drinks' sign through the sea wall. Swim first, drink after.
Waterfront town · 40 min by boat
Where Dubrovnik goes for dinner. The boat back at dusk is the best part.
After dark
Croatian wine · Flights
A narrow lane, a Pelješac flight, and someone who can actually explain plavac mali.
Craft beer
Croatian taps, local crowd, no cruise-ship pricing.
Orientation
How the city is actually divided, and what each part is for.
The walled city
Extraordinary at seven in the morning and after eight at night. Difficult in between.
Beaches, hotels, residents
Where the city actually lives, with the swimmable beaches to match.
Stay
Areas rather than hotels — pick the right one and the rest follows.
Inside the walls
Magical at either end of the day. Expect stairs, luggage problems and a premium.
Beaches · Value
Better rooms, better prices, a beach at the door and a 15-minute bus into town.
Practical
Context
Enough to make what you are looking at legible.
The Republic of Ragusa runs itself as an independent maritime state, playing Venice and the Ottomans against each other for four centuries.
An earthquake destroys most of the city and kills a fifth of its people. The uniform Baroque Stradun is the rebuild.
Besieged and shelled during the Croatian War of Independence. The brighter roof tiles you see are the repairs.
Further out
Worth a day if you have one to spare.
Vineyards & oyster bays
Ston's salt pans, Mali Ston's oysters and the steep plavac vineyards above Dingač.
Forested island & salt lakes
The greenest island in the Adriatic. Rent a bike at the pier and circle the lakes.
